The driver of a car that crashed into a Germantown townhouse last week is now facing multiple charges related to the incident.

Authorities report that the man was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when his vehicle struck the first floor of the townhouse on Palmetto Circle on March 12.

The driver has been identified as Tony Barnes of Accokeek in Prince George's County.

"Investigation showed he was speeding excessively and ran a red light," said Montgomery County Commander Nicholas Picerno. "When we spoke with the driver, he showed clear signs of impairment."

The townhouse owners were home at the time of the crash. Fortunately, one was upstairs and the other was in the basement, and neither was injured.

Homeowner Janet Ross described the crash: "The officer told me they were going over 100 mph and went airborne. If they had gone straight, they would have hit the brick part of my house. Because they went airborne, they crashed through the windows."

Police say Barnes admitted to using cannabis earlier that day and showed signs of alcohol impairment.

Both Barnes and another passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment following the crash. While hospitalized, Barnes was issued a lengthy list of citations, including:

  • DUI
  • Driving impaired by alcohol
  • Negligent driving
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failure to control speed
  • Failure to stop

Authorities confirmed Barnes ran a red light prior to the crash.

"There is a misconception that driving under the influence of cannabis is less dangerous than alcohol," Picerno said. "This incident clearly shows that any impairment while driving endangers the community."

Barnes faces potential jail time and a suspended driver’s license.

"It’s a serious concern that no one should have to face — someone driving impaired into their home," Picerno added.

Nearly a week after the crash, the damage remains evident. A light post in front of the townhouse was mangled, and the home has been condemned.

There is currently no update on whether the family will be able to return to their home.
